Human Ecology is a multi-discipline and convergence-based academic field that explores interactions between humanity and the living environment with the aim of improving the quality of human life. The College of Human Ecology became an independent college in 1991 and currently consists of four departments: the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition which cultivates experts in food and nutrition through the research and education of life sciences; the Department of Child Studies which focuses on training students into professionals in child care, counseling, and the promotion of family welfare; the Department of Fashion Design which seeks to nurture creative experts in the fashion industry who will lead the future trends; and the Department of Housing Environmental Design which fosters professionals in future-oriented and environmental-friendly residential space design. The Research Institute of Human Ecology, an affiliated institution of the College, plays a key role in human ecology research and exchanges with relevant organizations in the local community. Human Ecology which are closely related to the quality of human life, has become more important in modern society where the emphasis is placed on the quality of life and well-being. With the changes in the social environment including the Fourth Industrial Revolution and aging society, social demands for human ecology are increasing due to rising problems connected to the quality of life such as human alienation, disconnection, chronic diseases, and nutrition issues. As Korea’s global industrial center linked to the food and agri-life industry and traditional cultural resources, Jeollabuk-do Province, in particular, has seen the growing need for creative and innovative global talents to lead community development and contribute to the globalization of local resources. The College of Human Ecology has therefore gradually pushed forward with the goal of fostering “glocal” talents in the Fourth Industrial Revolution era by pursuing university education innovation with the motto of cultivating “creative talents in human ecology” who have an open mind, sensitivity, communication capability, and a challenging spirit.
