In modern Landscape architecture, urban parks and green spaces are established, based on the preservation of existing eco-landscape.
The critical roles of Landscape Architecture to physical space making were recognized with highway construction and residential complex development, which had been planned in the National Comprehensive Development Project. So early 1972, the Korean Institute of Landscape Architecture(KILA) had been established, which triggered the theory and practice of urban landscaping with Korean traditional landscape concepts.
The Department of Landscape Architecture at Chonbuk National University was established in 1984. The period of 1990 was characterized to be aware of the necessity of Environmentally Sustainable and Sound Development(ESSD). The global awareness of eco-friendly development launched the new emerging approach in landscape architecture that is eco-landscape planning and design for ecological restoration and natural scenic landscape preservation.
Modern landscape architecture has been working as multi and inter-discipline with urban planning, architecture & engineering, forestry and horticulture, which are recently interacting and cooperating with science of ecology.
The academic sub-fields of landscape architecture are categorized into seven as follows: landscape design, landscape planting & eco-restoration, landscape construction and materials, landscape management & maintenance, landscape information system, CAD/GIS, and the others.
