The PhD (Doctoral) program in Media Design at Keio University’s Graduate School of Media Design (KMD) is a research‑intensive doctoral degree that aims to train highly specialized media innovators and thought leaders with a global perspective who can push the frontiers of design, technology, policy, and creative systems. The program is structured around independent research supervised by faculty advisors, where students select their research theme, prepare a doctoral dissertation proposal, defend it, and then carry out sustained research culminating in a doctoral thesis and final public defense. Throughout their candidature, doctoral students enroll in advanced research subjects and engage with the creative and scholarly community at KMD, often addressing complex global challenges through transdisciplinary methods that bridge media, design, technology, human experience, and societal systems. Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact faculty in advance to discuss research directions before applying.
