The primary discipline of Chemistry is developed under the College of Chemistry, comprising five major sub-disciplines: Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Chemical Biology. The Chemistry discipline has been ranked in the Top 1‰ of ESI global rankings since March 2018, and was listed among the Top 100 of ESI global rankings since May 2019.

It has established a strong teaching and research team which includes one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The discipline has developed a distinctive development model that closely integrates theory with practice, following the path of "scientific issues - basic research and applied basic research - engineering and industrialization research". It has established distinctive research directions such as assembly chemistry & efficient utilization of resources, and catalytic chemistry & utilization of rare metal resources. Over the past five years, more than 150 national-level scientific research projects, including those funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, have been undertaken. A total of RMB 170 million in vertical R&D funding and RMB 140 million in horizontal project funding have been received.

The graduate education program emphasizes both fundamental chemical theories and cross-penetration with related disciplines such as Materials Science, Environmental Science, and Life Science. It combines theory with practice and cultivates chemical talents at various levels through all stages of scientific research, with a focus on developing high-level talents with multidisciplinary knowledge integration capabilities and innovative thinking and planning skills.
