Grassland Science at Nanjing Agricultural University is a foundational agricultural discipline and programme that originated at NAU, which is recognised as the birthplace of grassland science in China with a research history dating back to pioneering work in the 1950s. The field focuses on the biology, ecology, sustainable use and management of grassland ecosystems, integrating subjects such as forage and turfgrass physiology, genetics and breeding, grassland ecology, environmental protection, and forage production and utilization. Students in this discipline gain both theoretical knowledge and practical research experience in evaluating germplasm resources, understanding grassland environmental functions, and developing strategies for sustainable pastureland management and conservation. This multidisciplinary training prepares graduates for careers in agricultural research, grassland management, ecological restoration, and related sectors supporting sustainable agriculture and environmental protection.
