The Computer Science program at Shandong University started in 1971; it was one of the earliest computer disciplines in China at that time. In 1972, the DJL-1 Computer was released by SDU, which was ranked third across the country in terms of overall performance. DJL-1 won the Grand Prize at the National Science Congress held in 1978. In 1981, the Department of Computer Science at Shandong University was formally established. In 2001, the School of Computer Science and Technology took its current form following the merge of Shandong University, Shandong University of Technology, and Shandong Medical University.
The School of Computer Science and Technology offers an accredited PhD program as well as a postdoctoral training station in computer science and technology. The School emphasizes both theoretical and practical research, with research activities taking place in a variety of areas, including human computer interactions, virtual reality, embedded systems, networks and distributed systems, computer theory and algorithms, big data processing, natural language processing, multimedia analysis, information security and cryptography, etc.
