Shanghai Normal University is a key university in Shanghai. It is a comprehensive university with a strong emphasis on humanities and a focus on teacher education, and it develops in a coordinated manner across humanities, sciences, engineering, and arts disciplines.
Founded in 1954, the university became an undergraduate institution in 1956, was designated as one of the first institutions authorized to grant master's degrees by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee in 1981, and was approved to grant doctoral degrees in 1986. In 2017, it was selected as an institution implementing the Ministry of Education's Excellent Teacher Training Program. In 2019, it became a pilot unit for the construction of high-level local universities (disciplines) in Shanghai. In 2021, it was fully included in the list of high-level local universities in Shanghai.
The university has always attached great importance to Party building and ideological and political work, adhering to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, fully implementing the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and its subsequent plenary sessions, effectively strengthening the Party's overall leadership over universities, resolutely implementing the main responsibility of comprehensively and strictly governing the Party, fully implementing the Party's education policy, fulfilling the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, ensuring that the Party's will and propositions take root in universities, and ensuring that the university always remains a strong bastion for cultivating builders and successors of socialism. The university was selected as one of the first batch of Shanghai universities to be a comprehensive reform demonstration university for "all-round education" and one of the first batch of Shanghai universities to be a demonstration university for Party building, and five of its Party branches were selected as national model Party branches. It is also one of the first batch of universities to lead the overall experimental zone for the construction of "large-scale ideological and political courses" in Shanghai. The School of Education was awarded the title of National Advanced Collective in the Education System, and the School of Humanities was approved as a key leading college for curriculum-based ideological and political education reform in Shanghai universities. The university has been approved for one Ministry of Education demonstration course on curriculum-based ideological and political education, and six Ministry of Education teaching masters and teaching teams on curriculum-based ideological and political education. It has also been approved for 12 Shanghai municipal demonstration courses on curriculum-based ideological and political education, and two Shanghai municipal teaching masters and five teaching teams on curriculum-based ideological and political education.
