Aoyama Gakuin's history dates back to three schools founded by missionaries sent to Japan by the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States: the Girls' Elementary School opened in Azabu by Dora E. Schoonmaker in 1874, the Kokyo Gakusha opened in Tsukiji by Julius Soper in 1878, and the Bikai Theological Seminary opened in Yokohama by Robert S. McCray in 1879. Aoyama
Gakuin University was founded in 1949 as a new university based on Aoyama Gakuin, and in 2019 celebrated its 70th anniversary. While cherishing its traditions, the university is constantly transforming itself in pursuit of its ideal form as a comprehensive university by further improving its global education and research environment and promoting efforts to cultivate human resources who can contribute to the world.

Notes

Aoyama Gakuin University's main Aoyama Campus in Shibuya, Tokyo, is most easily reached from Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) in approximately 45-60 minutes. The best options are the Airport Limousine Bus directly to Shibuya Station or taking the Keikyu Airport Line to Shinagawa Station, then switching to the Yamanote Line to Shibuya.

From Haneda Airport (HND) - Recommended

Limousine Bus (Approx. 45-60 min): Directly from Terminal 1/2 to Shibuya Station (near the campus).
Train (Approx. 50 min): Take the Keikyu Airport Line to Shinagawa Station, transfer to the JR Yamanote Line to Shibuya Station.
Taxi: Approximately 7,000–8,400 JPY to the Shibuya area.

From Narita Airport (NRT)

Narita Express Train (Approx. 80-90 min): Take the Narita Express directly to Shibuya Station.
Limousine Bus (Approx. 90-120 min): Direct to Shibuya Station.
