Gunma Prefectural Women’s University (日本語: 群馬県立女子大学) is a public women’s university located in Tamamura, Sawa District, Gunma Prefecture, Japan. Established in 1980 to provide accessible higher education for women in the region, it relocated from Maebashi to its current campus in Tamamura in 1982 and remains one of only a few public women’s universities in Japan.
The university’s mission is to foster independent, culturally-aware women leaders who can contribute both locally and internationally. It started with departments in Japanese literature, English literature, and aesthetics & art history, and has since expanded its academic offerings to include faculties such as Literature and International Communication, as well as programs in Liberal Arts, foreign languages, cultural studies, and communication. Graduate programs in humanities and international communication were later introduced to deepen research and specialist skills.
Gunma Prefectural Women’s University emphasizes broad cultural education, international perspectives, and practical skills such as language proficiency and career readiness. The campus fosters a supportive learning environment with small class sizes, opportunities for internships, study abroad, and cultural exchange programs. It also serves as a community resource through research centers and initiatives like the Foreign Language Research Institute and Center for Japanese Language Education.
The university is accredited by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and is known for combining humanities, cultural, and international communication studies with a strong focus on empowering women for success in a changing global society.
