The Comparative Culture program at The University of Kitakyushu is part of the Faculty of Humanities and is designed to cultivate globally aware, culturally literate graduates who can understand and engage with diverse cultures from around the world. The curriculum takes a multidimensional, interdisciplinary approach, allowing students to explore Japanese culture alongside foreign cultures—including European, Asian, and other global cultural traditions—through subjects such as literature, language, history, art, religion, media, and everyday life. Students begin with foundational courses like Introduction to Comparative Culture and then, over the four-year program, choose specialized topics that align with their interests while developing foreign language skills (English, French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, etc.) through native-speaker instruction. The program’s flexible structure encourages both broad cultural perspectives and deep academic focus, with required seminar (ze­mi) work and a graduation thesis in the third and fourth years. Graduates are equipped for careers that benefit from cross-cultural understanding, such as international business, education, tourism, communication, and cultural exchange, and may also earn teaching licenses (middle and high school in Japanese and English) or museum curator qualification by completing designated coursework.
