The Oriental Painting major began with the first Painting Department opened in October 1946 when the school was established as the Art Department of the College of Art. In 1951, Oriental Painting Department (Oriental Painting) and Second Painting Department (Western Painting) were integrated into Painting Department. Before 1983, Painting Department was divided into Oriental Painting Department and Oriental Painting Department. Oriental Painting Education was conducted within Painting Department. And the major in Western painting. However, since 1965, practical examinations have been selected from the paintings and entrance examinations of charcoal and ink paintings. From 1976, when the application for the entrance examination application was submitted, the major was specified, and ink painting or coloring, watercolor or oil painting was selected, Actually, the recruitment of students with their majors in mind was done in the period of painting.
In 1983, Oriental Painting major changed greatly in its academic system as the three schools and structures of the School of Painting, Sculpture, and Applied Art were reorganized into five schools and structures. Since then, the Department of Oriental Painting has been separated into Oriental Paintings and Western Paintings. The Oriental Painting major is based on the school’s overall education goal of ‘holistic education’ and ‘raising basic literacy as an artist and fostering professional qualities’. As can be seen from the Orientation Major Education Goals of the 1980s (1985-1987), Oriental Arts majored in the comprehensive interdisciplinarity of East-West art in the basic course, The major educational goal was to explore ‘new creative world by planning the creative succession development of traditional painting’ in the major course.
The goal is to develop and nurture basic literacy and professional qualities as an artist through holistic education and formative experimentation through art. In this course, we will explore the formative characteristics of Korean art through extensive research and individual expression exercises throughout the oriental arts, as well as a comprehensive experience of interdisciplinarity throughout the East and West arts, It builds up. In his major, he takes an enterprising spirit of experimentation based on basic education, deepens ingenuity of expressive ability and formative theory, and explores new creative world by promoting creative succession of traditional painting.
From 2007 to 2011, the educational objectives showed a somewhat changed point, and specifically stated that “polishing of traditional material techniques such as pale mud technique, coloring technique, mural technique, However, as in the following (2013-2015) educational goals, the educational goals of the Oriental Studies major have been based on the basic goal of inheriting tradition and creating new ones without major changes.
Today, it has succeeded in the traditional formative art, ink painting and color painting style which has a long history, and the contemporary search of oriental painting is actively based on the idea and aesthetics of traditional literary painting. In the first year of the undergraduate foundation course, students experience the interconnectedness of Korean and eastern and western arts in a comprehensive way and acquire a wide range of expressive ability and culture for art. In the subsequent course, we focus on cultivating the individual’s creative ability through the enhancement of expressive ability and the deepening of formative theories by promoting the attitude of formal experiment based on oriental aesthetic sense.
The aim and goal of this oriental education major was related to the faculty who is the subject of education. Jang Woo-sung, who graduated from Tokyo Fine Art School and was appointed as the first professor of Oriental Painting in 1946, moved away from the Japanese style that was adhered to during the Japanese colonial period. Based on ink painting, Modernization has become a crucial task of the times. These two professors resigned in 1950 and 1961, respectively, right after the liberation and the aftermath of the unstable period of the Korean War respectively, and succeeded him from 1949 to 1962.
The succession of the Oriental painting tradition based on the ink paintings is the result of the Oriental painting major such as Park Se-won (student number 46), Seo Se-ok (student number 46), and Park No-Soo (student number 46), who entered the 1st Painting Division (Oriental Painting) from 1954 to 1962 (Professor, Department of Oriental Studies, Seoul National University) I, Professor, Department of Fine Arts, Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, Seo Se-ok, who led the abstract painting movement based on the literary tradition, and Sin-Im (55 students), who came to Korea in 1969, and Chung Tae-young (56 students), who came to Korea in 1983, Contributed to the character of the major education. In 1979, Kim Jae-sang (student number 59), who was engaged in the study of traditional wall paintings and figure paintings, and Kim Byeong-jong (student number 74), who expressed human subjects in 1985 with free materials and materials, And became the foundation of the education of Oriental Painting at the University until the late 1990s.
Starting in the 2000s with the retirement of Seo Se-ok, who had been in office for 33 years, in 1994, Kim Seong-hee (82 students) in 2001, Cha Dong-ha (85 students) in 2004 and Shin Ha-soon (83 students) in 2005 The appointment of the professors of the department of oriental arts was replaced by generations. Since they were graduates from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, the previous generation faculty and Oriental studies major had been pursued with a certain degree of continuity. After the first graduates were discharged, all of the practical professors who were assigned to the Oriental Studies major were all from the university. Their final degrees are three PhDs, three Masters, and four PhDs.
On the other hand, the importance of theory in Oriental painting education has been emphasized from the beginning of the major. This was in line with the goal of fostering the arts with a full-fledged artistry that the school has shown. However, in the case of the oriental art major, the final degree of the professor’s professor, such as Seo Seok-ok, who was exposed to the philosophy, is a theoretical field such as Oriental philosophy (Lee Jong Sang), Oriental art philosophy (Kim Byung- The aspect of emphasizing the mastery was strongly revealed, and the lectures associated with the theory were often made in creative class. Park Seo-won, Seo Se-ok Ok, Park Soo-jeong, Chung Tack-young, and Kim Byung-jong have also taught directly the theoretical subjects (oriental painting, formative theory). In 1994, Jung Hyung Min (71), who obtained a Ph.D. in Oriental Art History from Columbia University, USA, has been in charge of theoretical education in Oriental Painting major. In 2002, Kim Hyung-sook (student number 85), who majored in art education at the Ohio State University, USA, was a professor in charge of arts education cooperation at the university. The professors of Oriental Painting major are foreign universities and graduates of other.
