Comparative and International Education (CIE) is a two-year Master's program taught in English for international students at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU). The program provides a strong theoretical and empirical base for studying comparative and international education in a rapidly changing global context. The program enables students to learn the core concepts, scientific perspectives, and methodologies in comparative education analysis. Through its training and research activities, students can develop a better understanding of the current situation and developmental trend of global education.

Within the program, three specializations are offered: (1) area studies in comparative education, focusing on comparison of educational policies, systems, current situation and developmental trends among various countries, (2) international curriculum development and design, focusing on both the theory and practice of international curriculum development and design, and (3) globalization and international education, focusing on the educational policies and evaluation of international organizations, global educational leadership as well as intercultural competence and foreign language education. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be better prepared to work for professions of many types at international organizations, universities, research institutes, educational departments at governments, and other cultural and educational institutions.

Students are expected to complete the program within two academic years. An extension can be granted upon approval for personal or other specific reasons. The length of extension is at least six months but not more than one and a half years. Students are required to achieve the Chinese language competence of at least HSK3 upon graduation..
