Kindai University (Japanese: 近畿大学) is a major private, comprehensive university in Japan, headquartered in Higashiosaka City, Osaka Prefecture. It was founded in 1925 (originally as technical/science schools) and formally chartered as a university in 1949; its English name was changed from “Kinki University” to Kindai University in 2016 to support its global branding.
The university’s educational philosophy centers on “learning for the real world” and “nurturing intellectual and emotional intelligence,” aiming to develop graduates who are practical, socially responsible, and globally aware.
Kindai University is one of western Japan’s largest higher-education institutions, with multiple campuses across the country — including in Nara, Wakayama, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka — and a main campus in Higashiosaka. It encompasses a wide range of faculties and departments across fields such as science and engineering, business, law, literature and culture, international studies, pharmacy, informatics, agriculture, and health sciences.
With a student body of over 30,000, extensive research facilities, and more than 270 global partner universities, Kindai places emphasis on education, research, and international exchange, offering opportunities for study abroad and collaborative research worldwide.
The university is also known for notable achievements such as pioneering full-cycle aquaculture research (including bluefin tuna farming), a strong alumni network, and significant industry–academia collaborations.
